Crime of Indifference

Jesus, I wasn’t there when they proclaimed your Lordship
I wasn’t there when they declared the heavens
Like they did once with Pompeii
I wasn’t there when they publicly displayed
Their faith and professed obedience to your cross
Jesus, I was in exile in the privacy of
My soul.

Jesus , I denied you a million times
Yesterday
Worse, I have deserted you many times more
Today
Yet every moment I am
In pain
Always empty
Always in doubt
Like one shackled forever.

Yet I had seen you walk
In turbulent waters
On rugged plains

In all Galilees of the world;
Letting the blind see
The lame walk
The dead rise
The lepers whole again
The possessed suddenly free
Insanity take an instant flight.

Also I’ve seen you in my dreams
As vivid as you upturned the tables
Of the thieves
As gentle as you spoke the heartaches
As gracious as the multiplication
Of the host
As forgiving as your first word
On the cross

Despite all these, I must admit
Jesus, to me
You are still a stranger.
